I wanted to post something about the Aretha Franklin concert we went to on sunday. First, yes, she can still sing even though she's 65. She was wearing a cast on her foot and said a little about going to see the doctor in LA, but never mentioned how she hurt it and even tried to dance a little bit. She was also wearing a mumu the size of a termite tent.. OK not that big, but she's a big woman. It doesn't seem to bother her a bit. At work someone was saying that if they had all that money, they'd get a personal trainer to keep them in shape. I don't think she cares. In her program she actually had a few recipes.. one for Aretha's "le bomb" meatloaf, and another for "it won't last long" peach cobbler. toward the end of the show, she thanked management, and her band, and threw in a special shout out to the buffet. I think the woman likes to eat. I got the tickets from someone at work who won them and didn't want to go. As soon as I got them, I started thinking about how I'd hear her sing "sock it to me, sockittome, sockittome" since that's the favorite part of her best known song. Of course, she sang Respect. she opened with it, and as I listened, i thought about how cool it must be to be Aretha Franklin. Not just because she's immensely talented, rich, and famous... beyond that. What's she known for? If you know anything about aretha, it's respect. Kids all over the world learned how to spell respect thanks to her song. and it's a song that sounds like it was written because of her frustration.. that she wasn't getting the respect she deserved and by funneling that energy into such a catchy song has made her a musical icon, and a symbol of strength and respect for others. what a great life!

John David Booty lead the Trojans to a 28-10 victory on Saturday. It can't be easy to follow up not one, but two Heisman winning quarterbacks. In his 2 games he's played well- 6 TDs and 0 INT. Not a bad start. We'll see how he develops throughout this year and the next.
He's already got creating way funnier signs at games than Leinart or Palmer ever did. During last night's game they showed a group of guys with B O O T Y painted across their chests. I guess we should be glad it was on their chests.
It really is a great time of the year. I'm home watching the USC home opener. This time of year every team's still a contender, we're still curious who will be good.. and it's still too soon to give up on anyone. This is the Trojan's first test- we're at home against Nebraska, I've got food on the way, a lot of cold beer, and a quarterback who's name is Booty. Seriously. ABC just ran a clip of our old quarterback Matt Leinart saying "I'd like to introduce the new quarterback, John David Booty" then started the Yin Yang Twins' song that goes "booty booty booty booty rockin everywhere, rockin everywhere." It's recorded and waiting for me in High Def, it's beautiful out, and it's going to be a great game. I've been teaching podcasting all day and plan on fully enjoying the rest of the weekend. (I'm actually going to an Aretha Franklin concert tomorrow night. ) Go Trojans.
